lglan.net dies, a new server is born
So on tursday morning after pop3 broke and I exhausted all my time and know-how trying to get it working again, I decided to just give the server a reboot. Unfortunately, the server didnt boot after I shut it down. I called he.net after about 20 mins of downtime to ask them to go reboot it again and look at its screen. The guy basically said that ‘this is one unhappy server’ and I thanked him and told him I would take care of it. Later that morning I took a drive to Fremont to take a look and the server was just stuck at ‘Grub loading stage 2…’ and would not go any further. Without a floppy or a cd-rom drive in the system I had to take it home to do any additional debugging. Instead of going home though, I went to PixelUSA and ordered a new server to replace the broken circa 1999 dual Pentium 3 server that wouldnt boot. They were able to build me a new dual core server and have it available the same day, so thats what I did. The specs of the new server are as follows.
Intel D945GTP Motherboard
Intel Pentium D 2.8Ghz Dual Core w/2x 1mb L2 cache
2gb, 2 x 1gb Crucal 533mhz memory
2 x Maxtor 250gb SATAII Drives Mirrored for /
1 x WD2500 SATA for /backup (built in cPanel backup system
2 x Intel 10/100/1000 adapters, one onboard, one PCI
Fedora Core 5 w/cPanel
I choose to use Fedora Core 5 because I am most familiar with Redhat based systems and this newest version that just came out supported my SATA Raid card built into my motherboard out of the box. The original spec also included a HighPoint SATAII raid controller, but that was when I had an Asus motherboard that didnt have onboard Raid. I was actually going to still use it until Matt discovered that the new board included it, so now I have to go return the HighPoint card.
Since you are reading this, the new server is now online. If I host any sites for you, please note that I will no longer be hosting DNS on my box. If you point your domain to NS1.lglan.net and NS2.lglan.net, you need to find an alternate provider. You can use Everydns or dnsexit, which are both free DNS proiders that do a good job.
